Sylvania Heights Public School To Begin Work On Edible School Garden, Thanks To IMB
Students at Sylvania Heights Public School will start planting an edible garden on Monday 23 May, thanks to a $7000 grant from the IMB Building Society’s Community Foundation.
Designed to educate students about the importance of the environment and sustainable gardening, the planting will be a community and school event with students, teachers, parents and IMB Sylvania Branch Manager Glen McManus, donating their time and rolling up their sleeves to assist the working bee from 11:25am.
In the last 11 years, IMB Building Society’s Community Foundation, has provided more than $5.2m in funding to more than 250 worthwhile community projects in the ACT, Illawarra, South Coast NSW and Sydney. Last year, the IMB Community Foundation donated more $36,000 to projects in the Sutherland Shire.
Sylvania Heights Public School teacher, Tracey Lewis, is excited to get the project started and put the much-needed funding from IMB to good use.
“The opportunity to plant and maintain an edible garden is a great chance for students to engage in a fun and creative activity outside of the classroom. As a school, we are all very appreciative to IMB for providing the funding and support needed to make all of this happen.”
IMB Sylvania Branch Manager, Glen McManus, echoed Ms Lewis’ enthusiasm for the project and said he hopes to someday enjoy the fruits of his labour.
“Here’s hoping I’ll be invited to enjoy a fresh vegetable lunch at Sylvania Heights Public School! The edible garden is a fantastic and educational project that has potential to prove to kids that healthy eating can be fun. It is projects such as this that involve and benefit the entire community that IMB is so proud to support.”
IMB Building Society’s Community Foundation was established 11 years ago to give financial assistance to community-initiated projects in the areas in which IMB operates. Applications for this year’s round of funding closed in January, with recipients to be announced in June.
